God's Great Grace
Grace Still Amazing
John Newton wrote those great words,
"Amazing grace, how sweet the
sound
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was blind but now am found
Was blind but now I see."
Yes, God's grace is amazing when we think of how
God forgives our sin through the imputed work of Christ on the cross. But
God's grace is also amazing because it is not just a saving grace, it is also
a keeping grace. Newton also wrote,
Through many dangers, toils and
snares
I have already come;
"Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home."
God told the Apostle Paul "My grace is
sufficient for you" (2 Cor 12:9). One of the most important words in that
verse is the little word "is." It is in the present tense. If God's grace is
sufficient now, it will be sufficient tomorrow, just as it was sufficient for
yesterday. We do not need tomorrow's grace until tomorrow. We cannot take in
and store a supply of grace for when we need it. God's grace is supplied
moment by moment as we need it. And it always IS. It never fails, never runs
out, is never late. It IS!
If you are passing through deep waters and God
has not seen fit to relieve your trouble, remember there is grace available to
you so that by faith you can endure. In fact, another word for grace is the
word "ability." God's grace is the ability you need to face whatever is in
front of you at the time. Remember God is omniscient, He knows what things
you will face today as well as tomorrow. He has planned to give you the
ability you need if you will only look to Him and allow Him to work in your
life. If you had known ahead of time what trial you would face today you
would have despaired and felt you would never be able to bear it; but today
His grace IS, it is there.
And part of God's grace is not only what He
gives you to face the day, but also what He does not give you because He knows
your limits. Paul also told the Corinthians, " No temptation has seized you
except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be
tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also
provide a way out so that you can stand up under it"

Grow in Grace
2 Thessalonians 1:2 "Grace and
peace to you from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ." (NIV)

God wants us to grow in grace and advance in spiritual
knowledge. Therefore, along with His Word, He gives us Christian leaders who,
because of their maturity, can act as ministers and teachers to edify us (Eph.
4:11), give us a broader insight into the deeper life of consecration, and
instill in our hearts a better understanding of the true wisdom which is from
above. As we thus mellow and mature through grace we shall grow "until we all
reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become
mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ."
Peloubet's Notes relates in substance the following incident: It is said that
those who wished to qualify for positions in the elite guard of King Frederick
of Prussia were required to measure up to a certain commanding stature. A
Christian lady thought so much about this annual "Measuring Day" ceremony that
when she went to bed one evening she had a dream in which she imagined there was
a day when everyone's growth in grace was similarly measured. An angel stood
with a tall, golden rod in his hand over which was fastened a scroll on which
appeared these words: "The measure of the stature of the perfect man." The angel
inscribed in a large book all the important statistics as the people came up one
at a time in response to the calling of their names. The instant anyone touched
the rod an astounding thing happened - each shrank or increased in size to his
or her true spiritual dimensions! Everyone, including the recording angel, could
thus miraculously see what otherwise would have been perceived only by the eye
of God.
If today were the "Measuring Day" (and it may well be if Jesus suddenly
returns), would you be ashamed of your spiritual stature? Take inventory; is
your soul shrinking from "malnutrition," or are you feeding on the Living Bread,
and thus daily attaining a little more of the "stature of the fullness of
Christ"? This is why some said, "Live now as you shall wish you had lived when
you stand at the judgment seat of Christ."

Grace
2 Corinthians 12:9 "...he (God) told me,
My grace is enough; it's all you need.
My strength comes into its own in your weakness.
(THE MESSAGE)

We sing;
"Amazing grace how sweet the sound
that saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost, but now am found
Was blind, but now I see."
Another song goes like this,
"Marvelous grace of our loving Lord,
Grace that exceeds our sin and our guilt
Yonder on Calvary's mount out-poured
There where the blood of the Lamb was spilt."
Grace is one of the outstanding themes of Scripture. Last week I turned your
attention to 2 Cor 12:8-9 "But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you,
for my power is made perfect in weakness." Earlier in this chapter (2 Cor. 12)
Paul said that he had a thorn in the flesh. He wasn't alone in this, was he?
There is a thorn of one kind or another in everyone's life. There is even a
cross in the heart of god. The Savior wore a crown of thorns which symbolized
those jagged thorns which tore His own soul.
Paul doesn't tell us what his torn was, and thank God he didn't. This way we can
all identify with him. As someone wrote, "The Scriptures are as wise in their
reservations as in their revelations." Enough is revealed to make faith
intelligent and enough is reserved to give faith room for development.
Paul prayed to have this thorn removed. "Three times I pleaded with the Lord to
take it away from me"(2 Cor 12:8). If we prayed more before we complained we
would bless more than blame. And just as definite as Paul's pray was God's
answer, in 2 Cor 12:9 we read "But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for
you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the
more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me."
Yes, His grace is sufficient. And why should it not be, it is from Him Who is
all-sufficient.
But what is grace? Grace is God-given ability. It is the God-given ability to be
forgiven, to see our way through life's fog, to stand up under life's burdens,
to feel when the soul goes numb from despair. What is your need today? Remember
God said, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in
weakness."

Overflowing Grace
John 2:7-8 “Jesus said to them, "Fill the waterpots with
water." And they filled them up to the brim. (8) And He said to them, "Draw some
out now, and take it to the master of the feast." And they took it” (NKJV)

We have all heard of God’s “amazing grace.” And I have
frequently mad mention of God’s “unreasonable grace.” But I think Charles Haddon
Spurgeon has shed light on what we can call God’s “overflowing grace” in John
2:7-8. He wrote:
“He does not give to men just enough for their necessity, but he gives up to the
higher degree which we call enjoyment. Here he turns good wholesome water into a
sweeter, richer, more nourishing beverage; perhaps we little know how truly good
and sustaining that God-made drink was to those who were privileged to taste it.
Our dear Master will give to all those who are his followers a joy unspeakable
and full of glory. They shall not only have enough grace to live by so as barely
to hope and serve; but they shall drink of "wines on the lees well refined;' and
shall have grace to sing with, grace to rejoice with, grace to fill them with
assurance, and cause them to overflow with delight. Our Beloved has not only
brought us to the house of bread, but to the banquet of wine. We have heaven
here below. Jesus does not measure out grace by the drop, as chemists do their
medicines; but he gives liberally, his vessels are filled to the brim.”
Grace! God’s amazing, unreasonable, and overflowing grace to those of us who
know Jesus Christ our personal Lord and Savior.
